STORY 12 : I wonder what is my father's nationality! ?
Last time I introduced “Crazy self-proclaimed film director” Bryan from Switzerland!
A foreigner who can't speak even one Japanese come to an entertainer who goes to TV and visit the office without an appointment to take an interview!
While complimenting him insensitive and reckless behavior, I was amazed that it was just Crazy guy to have an obscene interview with amateur girls! ? Lol
In any case, I was born in Japan and only communicated with Japanese, so the common sense of Japan ≠ the common sense of the world is irresistible!
Today, I'd like to introduce you to Cameron, a French high school student who taught me Japanese common sense ≠ world common sense!
International student homestay acceptance starts!
One day when I started my airbnb in January 2015 and my intercultural communication progressed smoothly, I received an inquiry from a rare Japanese guest.
I thought it was unusual, and when I asked it in detail, it was a Japanese subsidiary of an international school in Sweden called EF!
I didn't know, but there seems to be a school in Shibuya that accepts foreign students coming to Japan every year. He said usually have enough room for 100 people to stay, but in June-September, 3-4 times more students come to Japan for the summer school, so a homestay will be secured !
An era when there are no words for private accommodation in the world. The story is that the person in charge had a problem finding a homestay, and then he pretended to be a guest and consulted with me who was an Airbnb host.
So first I came up with was a 16-year-old French high schooler, Cameron!
Staying for 2 weeks is fun because become a family!
About 75% of Asian guests, including mainland China, which account for about half of the 30 million foreign visitors to Japan, are in Japan as a whole. But I had relatively many European guests because I only posted English information during the Airbnb era.
European travel averages 2 weeks
Japanese take domestic trip in Okinawa or Hokkaido for 3 days and 2 nights and travel abroad for a week. However, as you can see, European take vacation are almost always 2 weeks!
Cameron was not a trip but a short-term summer school study, but he stayed for two weeks. Moreover, we have meal together in the morning and evening, so it is almost the same as the family!
Cameron said, “I'm still a high school student so I can't drink!”, But he enjoyed intercultural communication with other guests like this!
Mother is Vietnamese, what nationality of father is!?
So, I talk to Cameron and was surprised about Japanese common sense ≠ world common sense.
At one time I was listening to the Cameron family while chatting. Then he said mother is actually an immigrant from Vietnam!
That's right! So Cameron is a Mix! So, is your father French? I was shocked by Cameron's answer when I heard it!
"Well, What's my father nationality?"
"Eh !? What do you mean? Isn't he French because he lives in France?"
"Yeah, of course, my passport is French! But my father's grandpa was ◯◯ and my grandma was ◯◯. And my grandpa was ◯◯, so I don't really know!"
"What a shock!!! Is that so? It's natural that we Japanese are both fathers and moms, but Cameron and other Europeans dads and moms are obviously Mix, so they don't know the nationality!"
Sadly, the world has increased its nationalism first thanks to conservatives and introverted politicians such as President Trump.
However, European common sense that has accumulated history on the continent that has continued for many years is different from Japanese common sense that has accumulated history in island countries!
Intercultural communication = peace education = Who are you?
Story changes but I had heard about Masahiro Fukuhara, who is currently working on elite education in Japan.
There were two shocking stories for me who knew only about Japan at that time.
・ European parents travel alone when they become junior high school students. The reason is to know different cultures with different languages, races and religions. And knowing different cultures ultimately leads to knowing peace
Japan is often called peace idiot, but if there are few opportunities to learn about other cultures, it's natural to be paralyzed to know about peace in the essential part!
One more surprise story
・ The first question of entrance examinations at top universities such as the American Ivy League, European Oxford and Cambridge is common around the world.
Do you know the answer?
The answer is super simple "Who are you?"
What do you answer when asked "who are you?" Of course can't enter top universities with "My name is Shinji. My hobby is football."!
What is required here is what kind of thought, why do you learn and what kind of life do you have? In short, the identity itself!
Who are you? Continue to improve yourself with cross-cultural communication so you can answer it!
Intercultural communication life continues! !
Intercultural communication life that started with the fact that I went to Tanzania when I couldn't speak English in the era when the term “private residence” didn't exist.
When I noticed, I accepted an international student homestay from an international school in a few months, and I learned about the peace education that cross-cultural communication has!
Next time, I will introduce the cross-cultural communication party, the ultimate place for cross-cultural communication that began gradually around this time!
See you!
Have a nice weekend!
